Promdemonium for a good cause Want a chance to re-live your high school prom and raise money for a good cause? You're in luck because Promdemonium returns Saturday to Saint Brigid's Centre for the Arts and Humanities. Now in its third year, organizers say Promdemonium is a "radical, community-oriented, gender-bending, bike-loving, enviro-humping, queer-diggin', slow dancing, big-dress wearing prom that you never had in high school." Five Ottawa DJs and area vaudeville performance troupe Sexual Overtones will perform at the fundraiser, with proceeds going to Jane's Walk, the Carleton University Sexual Assault Support Line, Canadian Students for Sensible Drug Policy, Negative Theatre and Exile. "Promdemonium is a chance for dress-up fun in celebration of community spirit," says Tara Lyons of the organizing committee. "And the money raised will go a long way to cultivate and support local artistic, creative resistance and community-building initiatives." Last year, organizers gave more than $2,500 to Ottawa projects, including Sexual Overtones, Agitate -- an Ottawa-based organization for queer women of colour, mixed race or Aboriginal heritage, the 2009 Organizing for Justice conference, and the Indigenous People's Solidarity Movement Ottawa, a grassroots organization that organizes a speaker's series to educate the public on various First Nations issues. Promdemonium is May 1 at Saint Brigid's Centre for the Arts and Humanities (310 St. Patrick St.). Advance tickets are available at Venus Envy (320 Lisgar St.) and Octopus Books (116 Third Ave.). Tickets are sliding scale prices ($10-$20 suggested) and some lower-income accessible tickets are still available for $5.
